Quilt binding calculator

Plan straight-grain width-of-fabric binding strips joined with diagonal seams. See the strip count, modeled joined length, remainder, and exact unrounded fabric length.

Measurements

Your chosen total extra beyond the quilt perimeter, not extra per side.

Measure the width you can actually cut after excluding selvages. The model subtracts one strip width from each strip’s length to allow for diagonal joins.

How the model works

Usable width and diagonal joins

Usable fabric width is the cross-grain width available for a strip after you leave out the selvages. A diagonal join consumes length at both strip ends; this model conservatively treats each strip as contributing usable fabric width minus one strip cut width.

It divides the perimeter plus your chosen extra binding by that contribution, rounds the strip count up, then multiplies the count by strip cut width for the exact unrounded fabric length.

Worked examples

Recomputed strip plans

60 × 80 in quilt

Perimeter 280 in plus 12 in extra gives 292 in required. With 42 in usable width and 2.5 in strips, each contributes 39.5 in. Eight strips model 316 in joined, leave 24 in, and require 20 in of fabric—arithmetically 0.555555555556 yards.

150 × 200 cm quilt

Perimeter 700 cm plus 30 cm extra gives 730 cm required. With 110 cm usable width and 6.5 cm strips, each contributes 103.5 cm. Eight strips model 828 cm joined, leave 98 cm, and require 52 cm of fabric—arithmetically 0.52 metres.
